Man Plans

Man plans, God laughs
We're either too dumb or too clever by half
Sun comes, stars go
We're all bit players in an unscripted show

As a kid of eighteen I was sure I was just
But the dreams of a kid quickly turn into dust
Now the planet's still turning, my hair's turning grey
Having more fun tomorrow than I had yesterday

Man plans, God laughs
We're either too dumb or too clever by half
Sun comes, stars go
We're all bit players in an unscripted show

In my teens I was king, I would conquer all wrongs
I would write the right words, I would sing the right songs
Now the "Oldies But Goodies" are with me today
And I'm happy to hit the right notes when I play

Young aches, old pains
We root for the snow days and bitch when it rains
One thing stays true
I want the last laugh cause it's long overdue

(Back in college I had just begun to have fun)
There was an old guy in the back seat when I was in school
(Nobody's gonna stop me, no)
He did all of his homework, studied and lived by the rules
(Cause I was a smart young guy, and I knew it all anyway)

We all laughed - we knew that he would get the "A"
(Seems I've forgotten most of it)
Now the joke is on me, cause I'm that old guy today
(I'm doing my homework now)

Man plans, God laughs
We're either too dumb or too clever by half
Sun comes, stars go
We're all bit players in an unscripted show
